Interesting link to lots of info re the hobby.

K6WA Dave Cooper suggested that I stop using "roger that" on the FM modes... (basically his point was that if I intend to say I understand -- just say "I understand" instead of "roger that"... why use "roger that" when I probably only need to say "roger").
First off, I agree and will use "I understand" or similar in the future. However, I thought I would look up what "roger" means and where it came from... In the process, I found this interesting site that I now share with you.

Experimental EchoLink station...

Hi All,
K6OJ has offered to provide another Echolink station. We are currently experimenting with it. It is possible that eventually the preferred order of stations will become K6OJ-R, KR6DD-R, and N6WN-R.

There are some advantages to the K6OJ station as it is a single purpose station (the computer is not being used for other things and the radio is not being used for other things), so the facility should be more predictable than either KR6DD's or N6WN's Echolink stations.

If the K6OJ Echolink moves past the experimental stage, current plans are that it will be enabled for special events (such as the 9amtalk net) or when particular authorized parties decide to enable it.
Thus, the impact of Echolink on N6NFI would be consistent with the impact of the existing Echolink stations.

Disk Crash / Windows 7 install...

Hi All,
A FYI...
So... I had a RAID 0 (striping) configuration on my desktop computer (this makes for fast access, but no error recovery). This had 2 225GB drives for a 500GB total. The Raid controller is an intel RAID controller of some type. All my important info was on a Drobo. I also had some networked disks.

One of the 225gb drives died and so it became time to install a new operating system (and re-raid the system). Nothing important got trashed but for the operating system and installed applications.

I replaced both disks with 500GB disks, was able to create two RAID volumes on those disks. One Volume was a RAID1 configuration (mirrored - to enable data redundancy) and the other Volume was setup as a RAID 0 volume (I use this volume for the primary swap area).

The hope is, 1) I will be less susceptible to a single failure of one of those disks, and 2) will still have a reasonable fast swap area.

I also played with an Ubuntu installation... Decided to use SUN VM on top of Windows 7 for Ubuntu instead of running Windows 7 in a Ubuntu vm.
But now have a Ubuntu CD and Flash stick to let me play with this.

----------------------------
The windows 7 install has been straight forward so far except for....

The network drives are on a Cisco NSLU2. I could not mount the drives.
There is a windows 7 configuration modification that works... that change is documented by
http://www.vistax64.com/vista-account-administration/8241-map-network-dr...

My Plan today is to talk to Adobe and Nikon to get their products re-installed.

Added a section in the newbe forum re Tone vs Tone Squelch...

I was monitoring the Youth net last weekend.
I noticed that Ryan (who did a really good job as NCO) missed a few short comments (these were short callsign ids, with a bit of fast key)...

After talking with Ryan, we determined that he has his radio set to SQL instead of Tone.
He missed the few short comments because the radio did not have time to break squelch before the transmission ended.

I added this to the Forum.

Just added some CW based linked....

Added a link to a basic CW operation site.
I also found a link to download a really good book on how to learn and improve CW.
Enjoy!
